The best gluten free brownie mixes
We’re all about cooking from scratch, but sometimes there isn’t time. When three gluten-free brownie packages went on sale last week we took it as a sign to run a taste test, so the next time we’re in a time crunch and need a quick and easy desert, we know what to buy.
We tested the Betty Crocker Gluten Free Chocolate Brownie Mix, XO Baking Gluten Free Brownie Mix and Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Brownie Mix head to head in our test kitchen. They are all very similar in ingredients and instructions. (The biggest difference between them is the Betty Crocker does not call for butter.) All three whipped together easily and cooking time was comparable, too. The similarities disappeared on the fork.
We had a few friends and family over for dinner and for desert we taste tested all three brownies. The Betty Crocker had a nice consistency, with a bit of crunch, but was a little dry in the mouth. The Bob’s Red Mill was moist and had a nice rich flavour. The XO Baking was in between, with a cake like consistency and a chocolatey flavour that wasn’t too intense.
By the time everyone was full the results were clear. Five out of six people at our dinner party agreed the Bob’s Red Mill was the best gluten free brownie mixture. You can check out a video of our scientific testing process:)
